L.C. Henderson / The Technician
L.C. Henderson, Founder and CEO of the Steppers Workshop has been Steppin for 17 years and teaching the art for 12 years. Henderson, a mathematics whiz, developed the 8-count method of instruction to teach himself to Step. Today, the 8-count system of dance instruction is widely recognized as the most efficient and precise teaching method.
Known for his meticulous attention to the details of the dance and his reputation for being able to teach students that have been unsuccessful in other classes, he is affectionately known by his students and other instructors as “the technician.” Many of the nation's most outstanding professional Steppers and Steppin instructors have at one time been Henderson's students. In fact, anyone who teaches the 3-beat-Eight-Count more than likely has, either directly or indirectly, learned from him. Many have formed classes of their own.
L.C. Henderson's vision is to teach the art of Steppin to the masses. He is now on a mission to organize a Steppers Workshop in every major city and country worldwide. Expanding into Atlanta has resulted in a partnership with Sarah Teagle (The Steppers Club), a prominent Atlanta businesswoman. Recently h is influence has extended to a Cincinnati class taught by his former students, Smooth Stepper Will Diggs and his wife, Traveling Stepper's Workshop Secretary, Maisha Diggs.
“Social dancing is an integral part of African American culture,” says Henderson. “Steppin is based on the beat which, like the drumbeat, is a fundamental part of our heritage. Although the majority of my students are African American, I have Caucasian, Asian, East Indian and Latino students. Likewise, there are no age barriers. I have taught teenagers, and one of my most elegant Steppers is a lovely lady 82-years young.”
L.C. Henderson shuttles regularly between Chicago, Atlanta and Cincinnati conducting workshops and demonstrations on the art of Steppin to corporations and other groups.
